The Canadian Farewell Edition
Good Bye to the Golden Boy

The Seat of Government in Manitoba has been a sentimental spot for us.
Paul worked in the Legislature as part of the Press Gallery. But the showpiece of the Province of Manitoba was also a focal point for our personal life
Some five years ago, Paul picked a snowy night in front of the Legislature to propose marriage. Elaine said “yes,” while our horse drawn carriage pulled away and wound its way through the grounds.
We lived a block away form the Leg grounds during our first four years of marriage. It became our weekend playground and the starting point for tours through Osborne Village and along the muddy rivers.
We’ve left Osborne for Seattle University Village, left the Red and Assiniboine Rivers for Lake Washington and Elliot Bay.
Washington State's Seat of Government is half a state away. The Golden Boy is now half a continent away.
We miss the family and friends we left behind.
Of course, being converts to the west coast lifestyle, we are fully committed to having them come and experience it for themselves. Call in advance – we’d love to see you.
Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-Two has brought much change. Our move. Another roll of the dice in the Canadian Constitutional saga. A changing of the guard in the White House. Economic changes rumbling from the boardroom to the newsroom to the bedside to the living room.
There has been important changes on the home front too. The marriage of Elaine’s sister Suzie to Ian “Zeke” Scott in Carberry. The passage of Paul’s Grandfather, J.J. Toews. The completion of a comprehensive family history of the Routledges – the culmination of fifteen years of work by Elaine’s father, Jim and another three by her. (The rest of our year in review follows on page two)
For us, this fall has brought a fresh start in a new city. We are excited by the prospect of better times ahead – and wish the same for you in 1993.
See you in Seattle ... Soon!
What a Great View - Good-bye HSC, Hello Harborview
WINNIPEG -- After a twelve year tenure as a trauma/critical care nurse (and unofficial photographer) at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) in Manitoba, Elaine has joined the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center.
Despite the missing "u" in Harborview and the inverted "re" in Center, the new ICU is not a completely foreign environment. Like HSC, Harborview is a teaching hospital with a heavy emphasis on professional development and medical research.
Elaine is maintaining her ties to the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses and is already planning to attend its national conference next year in Vancouver.
Elaine began her new job on November 9, completing a move that had been in the works for more than three years.
Factette: Elaine has been at he Health Sciences Centre for a total of 14 years.
Changes - Please don’t Adjust your Set
SEATTLE -- Sometimes dreams do come true. A kid from the Canadian prairies is now working on his Ph.D and teaching television news courses at a major American university.
The work is consuming, the academic environment is challenging but Paul can't think of anywhere he would rather be.
After a three year search and application process, he accepted an offer from the School of Communication at the University of Washington.
He has followed the lead of his brother the educator -- ending up at the front of the classroom, teaching Television News Reporting and Production classes. (He also confesses to borrowing $5 "teacher" words from Dave -- like pedagogy.)
Paul is researching the notion of choice in an exploding TV market with all its new technology and global distribution. Why, in the words of that noted communications scholar Bruce Springsteen, are there "57 Channels and nothing on?" Stay tuned.
Zeke & The Prez - New brother-in-law may have ties to the Clinton White House
LITTLE ROCK -- The morning after the November 3rd U.S. election, President-Elect Bill Clinton told ABC NEWS that his old companion (dog) named "Zeke is no longer with us."
Of course he's not. Zeke married Elaine's sister Suzie almost two months earlier. The wedding took place in Carberry, Manitoba. Zeke used the assumed name Ian Scott on the marriage certificate, a moniker he picked up in a school play. (Or was it the other way around?)
Suzie and Zeke drove off into the sunset in their baseball team's old yellow school bus. The couple, like the team, was dubbed the "Carberry Royals."
Travel Advisory
Visitors can take advantage of the places we know about (Elliot Bay, Pike Place Market, Husky Stadium, Olympic Rain Forest, Port Townsend) and are welcome to help discover places we haven’t seen yet – including the subterranean city that is buried under modern Seattle.
