Volume I, Number 12: 1999
The Roll-Over Edition
Where were you on 01/01/2000?
The Y2K rollover on January 1, 2000, joins a short list of dates that are proceeded by the question, where were you? It joins JFK in Dallas, Armstrong on the moon, and WTO’s "battle in Seattle." Our answer? Elaine is scheduled to be at Harborview, the northwest trauma center that does some of its best work in times of disruptions, disasters, and emergencies. Paul is scheduled to be at the state government Y2K status center, which monitors the rollover of mission critical computer systems into the new century date field.
Deputy State CIO
Paul now serves as the Deputy Director of the Washington State Department of Information Services (DIS). He began serving as deputy state CIO upon his predecessor’s departure in mid-1998. Following a national search, Paul’s appointment was formally approved by Governor Gary Locke on January 15, 1999. In the intervening months, the role has shifted from primarily a planning and policy function to expanded responsibilities in the state’s transformation to Digital Government – all of which is intended to realize the power of the Internet in providing service to the citizen. Cyberspace has not removed the need to travel – business took him to Atlanta, San Diego, and Indianapolis this year.
Points South, North and East
We made two trips to Manitoba this year. The first, in spring, was to celebrate the long anticipated wedding of Elaine’s brother, Paul (see passages). The second trip was an opportunity to celebrate Elaine’s parents 40th anniversary, participate in a traveling Toews reunion that followed the family’s original trek across southern Manitoba, and reunite with Paul’s former colleagues from CKND (Global) television.
Elaine joined in on the trip to Atlanta. We used some vacation time to extend our trip to Savannah. Whether your tastes go to Gone with the Wind, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, or Ken Burn’s Civil War,Georgia is an amazing place to explore. The plan had been that Elaine would join in the trip to San Diego but her travels were confined to visiting physiotherapists and chiropractors after being rear-ended by an uninsured motorist in September. She is on the mend but it is taking time.
It all started innocently enough
Last winter, we sketched out a seven-year plan for re-making the yard while taking a landscaping course at a local community college. Much of the planned work was collapsed into seven months when we had to replace the septic tanks. A 60 foot fir tree came down, as did a half dozen rhodies. In addition, the old dock came out after Paul and his dad build a new one over the July long weekend. The dock has quickly become a favorite place for us, visitors, and a little 1-year-old friend from down the road named Adam.
Passages
Elaine’s uncle Ivan Fraser Routledge died on October 9, 1999, in Hamiota Hospital. He had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in July. Elaine was able to visit with him in August.
Paul Routledge married Diane Streick on March 20, 1999 in Portage La Prairie, MB. The Streicks were very welcoming, making all the Routledges feel like they had been part of the family for years.
Alyssa Diane Routledge was born to Paul and Diane on August 18. 1999. Alyssa is the first niece on the Routledge side of the house and cousin to 2-year-old Jack. Alyssa timed her arrival to coincide with a visit by her new Aunt Elaine.
